EXTREMELY RARE 1936 OVERSIZED ENGLISH LANGUAGE NAZI HARDCOVER PHOTO BOOK “GERMANY”

This is a example of the rare 1936 Volk und Reich Verlag hardcover book GERMANY published in English. In our 4+ decades in the Third Reich book business we have only owned four examples of this English language version of the DEUTSCHLAND book and this one is in very nice condition. It is very, very rare!

Huge National Socialist construction projects are pictured: the Deutschlandhalle and Olympic Games facilities in Berlin, the Führerbau (shown below) and House of German Art in Munich, Nazi Party Day Grounds in Nürnberg, freeways, shipyards, factories, etc.

The huge 4-½ pound (!) 11 x 13-½ inch, linen hard cover book is filled with high-quality black & white and duotone photographs, including a huge two-color fold-out in the back featuring a swastika flag. GERMANY was printed as an expensive top-quality souvenir photo book for visitors to Nazi Germany during the Olympic year, and thus not many were sold. When World War II began many of the English language copies of this book that were purchased in 1936 in Germany were discarded by their owners, of course.

On this USMBOOKS web page we show a selection of photos from the book but of course, the 260 pages have much more to offer in large photos and huge two-page spreads. Examples include comparison photos of German heavy industry and agriculture, idyllic country life, new housing for average Germans, construction of the new Reichsautobahn, the development of new and improved automobiles and airplanes, SA men and Hitler Youths, progress in science and research, endless new employment opportunities and the pride Germans take in their labor - the revival of German economic life as a result of diligent young and old workers, cooperating to further Germany's rebirth. Special coverage is given to Germany's new and very powerful armed forces.

Of course, there are photos of Adolf Hitler and other Nazi dignitaries such as Joseph Goebbels, Robert Ley, Rudolf Hess, Baldur von Schirach and others, all with English language captions.

A lot of attention is paid to different National Socialist welfare organizations: WHW charity collections, HJ and BdM youngsters collecting food, clothes and Christmas gifts for the needy, an explanation of the obligatory labor year of the RAD, NSV homes for new mothers, entertainment and vacations for average workers through the KDF (Strength through Joy) organization, etc.

Famous German cultural and historical figures (they even included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!) and landmarks are shown and there is a photo section of boys and girls of the Hitler Youth - playing sports, marching, studying and helping out German citizens. The importance of labor is the focus in the photos of the RAD, the German State Labor Service.

The concept of Storm Troopers is explained in many striking photographs with captions, as well as rebuilding the German Wehrmacht after the March 1935 proclamation announcing the reintroduction of compulsory military service. There are many photos of huge enthusiastic crowds at the Reichsparteitag and marching through the city of Nuremberg - with captions in English filled with patriotism and pride in Hitler’s Germany, where today “State and Party are synonymous.”

The front flyleaf has a dedication in fancy two-color hand lettering showing this book was a gift to two dear friends in “eternal memory” of the 1936 Olympics.

This 88 year old English language First Edition of GERMANY is complete and in very nice used condition. Aside from the somewhat stained cover, this is a wonderful example of this exceptional Third Reich book by Germans about Germany in the English language. The book has no odor.

Clearly a case is made for the new and improved Nazi Germany where, “the artificial class distinctions which formerly separated the scholar from the laborer have been removed by National Socialism” and the text says “three characteristics typify this young generation: comradeship, self-sacrifice and patriotism.”

The photos in this book were compiled by Pay Christian Carstensen, Hans Hitzer and Friedrich Richter and the book was published by Verlag Volk und Reich in Berlin in 1936. W.D. Bayles was responsible for this English language edition.
