Goering, Himmler, Hitler
Charles and Anne Lindbergh with Hermann Goering at Carinhall

A lot of period and postwar publications are available about Adolf Hitler’s Reichschancellery in Berlin and his alpine home, der Berghof above Berchtesgaden. However, very little was published about Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring’s fabulous country estate Carinhall, which was named for his deceased first wife, the Swedish Carin von Fock.

Hermann Göring bought land as a private citizen on the Schorfheide, a low lying forested area north of Berlin in 1933. He passed on his house ideas to architect Professor Werner March (the designer of the Berlin Olympic Stadium) who completed a small hunting chalet in 1934. The simple house blended in with nature at the edge of the a beautiful lake, the Döllnsee.

Görings Reich is a well-researched, in-depth hardcover German photo book by Volker Knopf and Stefan Martens. It covers the history of the beautiful country estate from it humble beginnings, through many expansions, until 21 April 1945, when on Hermann Göring orders, a Luftwaffe unit blew up Carinhall just prior to the arrival of Soviet troops.

The photo content of Görings Reich is fantastic: architectural drawings, interior rooms, furniture, art, outside views, famous visitors, Göring’s model train set-up, guard troops and other personnel, construction contracts and bills, the 1:10 scale version of Sanssouci Palace as a play house for daughter Edda, drawings of post-war expansion plans as well as photos of the estate after its destruction.

Carinhall destroyed and overgrown
After the death of Paul von Hindenburg in August 1934, Hermann Göring became more involved in representing the Reich. Hitler’s Haus Wachenfeld (expanded in 1936 it became the Berghof) on the Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden was used to receive official state visitors, but it was quite small and too far away from Berlin. It was decided that Carinhall would be enlarged to become a Haus des Reiches, an official state residence. With a government decree the Schorfheide-area, including Göring’s Carinhall, was put into a foundation owned by the Prussian State, but Carinhall was to be at Göring’s disposal as long as he was alive.

Over the years many famous names were entered in the Carinhall guestbook: former American President Herbert Hoover, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, aviator Charles Lindbergh, Benito Mussolini and Count Ciano, British Foreign Minister Lord Halifax, the kings of Bulgaria, Rumania and Yugoslavia, Willi Messerschmitt, Heinkel, etc.

The authors researched the fate of artifacts from Carinhall that were looted after the war and there also is information about other real estate owned by Hermann Göring during the Third Reich, and what happened to it after World War II ended.
This 8-½ x 10 inch, 198-page hardcover edition of Görings Reich from 2006 is in very nice, little-used condition, no odor.
