Das Handwerk is an oversized Nazi ‘cigarette card’ style book published by Arbeitsdank-Verlag Berlin, a division of the DAF in Berlin, circa 1937. The big, heavy 9-½ x 12-½ inch linen hardcover book with gold blocking on the cover has 144 thick cardstock pages with background information and statistics on different specialty trades, crafts and professions in Nazi Germany.
The book has a foreword by Reichsorganisationsleiter Dr. Robert Ley about the goals of the RAD and DAF - satisfied and happy laborers in all professions in Nazi Germany, not through rules and regulations but by creating a good work environment and contented labor community. A second foreword by Reichsjugendführer Baldur von Schirach is about installing a proper National Socialist work ethic in German youth, thereby preparing them for their duties for the future of the Nation.
There is also a chapter with history of German crafts and artisans, as well as charts depicting the structure of the Nazi German labor organization. The book is fully indexed.
The pages have openings for 2-3/8 x 3-1/2 inch beautiful, glossy pictures which are neatly pasted into the book. These pictures were available at stores and businesses run by the artisans featured in Das Handwerk - bakers, cooper or barrel makers, brewers, cheese makers, book printers and binders, roofers, wood workers, electricians, opticians, butchers, beauticians, goldsmiths and silversmiths, engravers and printers, sculptors, plumbers, painters, basket weavers, hat and glove makers, masons, musical instrument makers, photographers, saddle makers, enamel sign makers, blacksmiths, chimneysweeps, tailors and dressmakers, shoemakers, pavers and brick layers, wagon makers, upholsterers, watchmakers, weavers, dental technicians, carpenters, etc.
This example of Das Handwerk is complete with all black & white pictures neatly glued in by the original Third Reich owner, and all the internal pages are in very nice condition. Near the top of this USMBOOKS web page is a photo of the title page of this book so potential buyers can see that a previous owner attempted to de-Nazify the DAF swastika on the title page. The linen hard cover shows light wear and much of the gold blocking on the swastika on the front cover was removed during de-Nazification after WW2. A previous owner tried to undo and repair the de-Nazification of the DAF swastika on the front cover at a later date and did quite a good job of it.
