With the construction of the Reichsautobahn of Adolf Hitler under the direction of Dr. Ing. Fritz Todt during the 1930s, the foreign and domestic travel industries in Germany flourished. The big 10 x 14 inch monthly travel, traffic and scenery magazine Deutschland circulated largely in the professional travel and hospitality industries.
Each heavily illustrated issue had a gorgeous full-color cover and is absolutely stuffed with in-depth photo feature articles on German travel destinations and German events and celebrations.
For sale on this USMBOOKS web page are all nine 1934 issues of Deutschland in a 10 x 13-¾ inch blue linen hardbound book. The issues were bound with their stunning color covers and the 3-¾ pound book has about 300 heavily illustrated pages.
Articles also cover sport facilities for the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berlin and the people of Berlin, the Pergamon Museum, skiing on the Zugspitze, spring on the Rhine river, travel by Deutsche Reichsbahn, the Passion Plays at Oberammergau, German cruise trips, German air travel, travel statistic comparisons between Berlin, London and Paris, excursions by postal bus, Munich, Hanseatic Cities in Northern Germany (Hamburg, Rostock, Lübeck, Stralsund, Danzig), German Health Resorts (Bad Homburg, Baden-Baden), Lake Constance, lakes in Bavaria (including the Königssee near Berchtesgaden), golf courses in Germany, Dresden and Leipzig in Saxony, the origins of the Wagner Ring (above right), the German Northsea coast, the Rhineland wine industry, historic Nuremberg, a flight over the Atlantic Ocean (in a Heinkel He 70), the Lüneburg Heath, Rügen island, the burial of President Hindenburg at Tannenberg, amber from Königsberg, Germand student life, German toys, Christmas in the Bavarian Alps, skiing on the Watzmann mountain at Berchtesgaden, etc., etc.
These 90 year old travel magazines list important happenings taking place in Nazi Germany including the Bayreuth Music Festival, the Nazi Party Days in Nuremberg, the 1934 Munich Art Exhibition, the Passion Plays in Oberammergau, Golf Championship between Germany and Sweden and Germany and Holland, Oktoberfest in Munich, the Harvest Festival at the Bückeberg, Exhibition Die Strasse in Munich, the Great Berlin Art Show, the International Hotelier Congress in Berlin and the State Schiller Festival Week in Weimar.
There are photographs of Adolf Hitler greeting Reichspräsident Hindenburg, Nazi Aviation Minister Hermann Göring, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, German pilots Ernst Udet, Gerhard Fieseler and Elli Beinhorn, as well as hundreds of pictures of cities, palaces, churches, beaches, mountains, and famous landmarks all over Nazi Germany.
Naturally, each issue also contained splendid ads from companies with a product or service to sell to those involved in travel within Germany.
There is tourist related advertising by Berlin hotels, “Art City” Munich, Dresdner Bank, Berchtesgaden, the Bayreuth Music Festival, Nürnberg die Stadt der Reichsparteitage, Siemens, AEG, Salamander shoes, iodine baths at Bad Tölz, the Rheingold Express, the 1936 Winter Olympics at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Berlin International Automobile Exhibition, and tourist destinations large and small.
The magazine Deutschland was published by the Reichsausschuss für Fremdenverkehr (German National Tourism Committee) and these 1934 issues are in great condition as they were protected by the sturdy hard covers for the last 90 years. No writing, no odor.
