Ist Deutschland zur See gesichert? translates as “Is Germany Protected at Sea?” and that is the title of the rare 1933 Sonderheft or Special Edition of the Hamburger Illustrierte (Hamburg Illustrated Magazine).

The 10-1/2 x 14-7/8 inch, 24-page Hamburger Illustrierte is in superb condition and has heavily illustrated articles about Germany’s disarmament at sea due to the Treaty of Versailles, what is left of the German naval fleet, the much bigger French fleet, Polish military ports, how to protect the coast of Germany, and Germany’s naval fleet without sea planes.

These three historic Third Reich news magazines have a total of 90 heavily illustrated pages. They were stored flat and have no odor.
The third magazine in this lot is the Deutsche Ausgabe (German Edition) of the Italian magazine TEMPO for 17 April - 1 May 1941 (Fascist year XIX). The cover of the heavily illustrated oversized magazine has striking picture of a Nazi soldier taking aim with a MG34 Nazi machine gun. The text below the pictures translates as “Remove the British from the Continent!”

This is a lot of assorted heavily illustrated Third Reich / World War II magazines. There is a 1933 Special Edition and a 1939 edition of Hamburger Illustrierte as well as a 1941 (or Fascist year XIX) German Edition of the Italian bi-weekly magazine Tempo.

This 84+ year old World War II Italian magazine was printed in Milan and contain advertising for Italian banks, typewriters and adding machines and industrial machinery.
There is a full-page illustrated article about dancer and film actress Ursula Deinert, cartoons, jokes, and advertising including a full-page ad by ALA, the Nazi Party advertising agency.
The 10-½ x 14-¼ inch, 50 page magazine has German language articles about British military defeat at Dunkirk (by the Wehrmacht) and at Cyrenaica in Libya (by Italian Fascist forces). Other articles highlight the Ligurian coast of Italy (with color pictures), the indigenous people of Bontoc in the Philippines, Italian sailors, mountain climbing, modern Japanese painting (with fine color illustrations), Cyclotrons, as well as an illustrated article about unemployment and poverty in the USA with the title Roosevelt against America. It also contains illustrated theater and film news.
This lot also contains the Monday 27 February 1939 edition of Hamburger Illustrierte with 16 heavily illustrated pages. When published it had 48 pages, but typical newsy pages 9-40 were discarded by a previous owner. The content has examples of lies about Hitler and Nazi Germany in the foreign press, pictures from Hitler’s visit to Hamburg on 14 February 1939, Hitler at the opening of the Berlin International Auto Show (above), as well as miniature covers of issues of Hamburger Illustrierte during the first 20 years of publication.
