This is a wonderful old portrait of Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich in the uniform of Nazi Deputy Reichsprotector of Bohemia and Moravia and General of Police, We can not prove that this large 56 x 74 cm (22-1/4 x 29-3/8 inch) oil on canvas painting is an original and not a copy, but either way it is an extremely well-done likeness of the seated Nazi leader, and the bears the signature of Walter Einbeck in Prag (Prague, Praha) and the date 1941 in the lower right corner.
The unusual portrait shows the blond haired, blue eyed Heydrich looking straight ahead in an extremely well-detailed uniform bearing SS, Luftwaffe and paramilitary decorations (in addition to his SS and police positions, Heydrich was a pilot and an officer in the Luftwaffe).

Decorations on the greenish-gray uniform include SS-Obergruppenführer collar tabs, shoulder boards and sleeve eagle, an Old Fighter’s chevron, a Reichsführer-SS cuff band, a Sicherheitsdienst (SD) sleeve diamond, a Nazi Party Honor Badge, German Horseman’s Badge, State Sport Badge, Pilot Badge, Fighter Pilot combat clasp, Iron Cross First Class, on Cross Second Class ribbon, SS Honor Ring, chained SS dagger, and a ribbon bar of various Wehrmacht, police and other medals.

The painting canvas is woven tan material stretched and tacked on a European style beveled oak wood stretcher dated 18. Dez 1941.

The stretched canvas is mounted in a relatively modern American or English gilt frame marked “1 FOOT ALLOWANCE”. The outside dimensions of the 1-1/2 inch thick wood frame are 25-1/4 x 33-1/4 inches. We have owned this painting just as it is for more than 10 years.

Unlike many paintings of famous or notorious people, this portrait of SS-Obergruppenführer Heydrich bears an uncanny, lifelike resemblance to the man. The light blue eyes are a remarkable feature of the pleasant if somewhat dour face set against a very dark brown background. We have searched for many years for a photograph on which the painting may have been based, but have never found it.
