This is a nice used example of the Third Reich young person’s book, an adventure story called Stammführer Jochen Husemann by Wilhelm Gutjahr. The book starts with a special page about the decorated author who died on the East Front on 25 May 1942, during the Battle of Kharkov (shown left). He was remembered as a one the best youth leaders, strict but fair and full of idealism and driven to serve the Führer and the German Nation.

HJ Pimpf
The semi-autobiographical book starts with Jochen Husemann guarding the building materials of the grandstand to be set up for the visit of the Führer to the harvest festival at Bückeberg. Other adventures of the Hitler Youth leader follow, meetings with RAD men, his plans to become a teacher, Jungvolk hiking trips and stories around the campfire with his young friends, etc.

Soldaten-Tagebuch (soldier diary) entries about the start of Husemann’s military training are part of the story in between HJ Pimpfen-Führer and Wehrmacht soldier. Jochen Husemann participated the Anschluß and the Wehrmacht entry into the Sudetenland, and was promoted to Unteroffizier before the September 1939 German invasion of Poland.

Husemann died in combat in the Tuchola Forest in West Prussia during the night of 3 - 4 September 1939. While leading his men in battle, Husemann was shot in the head while getting ready to throw a grenade which tore off his hand when he was shot and left the right side of his body messed up and bloody.
The story of Husemann's death is told by his old HJ friend Lutz Vomhoff, who served in the same Kompanie, but survived. He remembered Husemann as an exemplary leader and good friend and Stammführer Jochen Husemann ends with Husemann’s last - patriotic and idealistic - letter to his former comrades.

This 5 x 7-5/8 inch, 192-page hardcover Third Reich book has illustrations by Hans O. Wendt interspersed in the text and was published by Junge Generation Verlag in 1942.
