The telegram offered on this USMBOOKS web page is an excellent original example of a Schmuckblattelegramm or decorative telegram that was sold by the post offices, telephone offices and telegraph offices in the Third Reich Germany of Adolf Hitler. It is a huge folder measuring about 11-3/4 x 16 inches printed on heavy, high-quality cardstock (folds to 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 inches so it could be delivered in an envelope).

These special, decorative telegrams were produced to send when one wanted something beyond a regular telegram. The cost was only 75 Reichspfennigs (30 US cents) more than a regular telegram!

This Deutsche Reichspost Telegramm features a superb painting of Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler during a parade in Nuremberg, surrounded by Nazi swastika flags by Ludwig Hohlwein of Munich on the cover.

It was sent from a town called Mühlheim in the industrial Ruhr area (between Duisburg, Essen, Oberhausen and Ratingen) on 19 January 1940 on the occasion of an engagement. The message on the inside is typed and contains heartfelt congratulations to an engaged couple named Loehr and Voderlinden. It was sent by Fritz Passing and his wife.

This rare original Nazi era telegram is in very good used condition.
