During the Third Reich in Germany, the principal Air Force or Luftwaffe bi-weekly magazine was Der Adler (The Eagle), a big 9-3/4 x 12-3/4 inch 50+ page, heavily illustrated news and information publication. Not often, but occasionally, the magazine published a Sonderheft or Special Issue like this one on the Legion Condor - Deutsche Freiwillige kämpften für Spanien (The Condor Legion - German Volunteers fighting for Spain).
This special issue of Der Adler begins with a formal portrait of Nazi Air Minister Hermann Göring with a Marshal's baton in his hand, and goes on to cover The War in the Air (fighters and bombers), Three Years of War, the War From Above, Flak Units on the Ground, German Communications Units, Corresponding with the Homeland, Leisure Time Activities in Spain, and You Are Fighting for An Idea.
The magazine was published in cooperation with the Reichsluftfahrtministerium and contains lots of ads from companies that manufactured aircraft or products associated with aircraft and soldiers.
Dated 31 May 1939, this Nazi magazine is dedicated to the men who had fought in Spain in the German Condor Legion using German equipment, pilots and air crew to defeat the Communists heavily entrenched in the country. The German men of the Condor Legion dressed in uniforms very reminiscent of ordinary German uniforms but with different insignia and as volunteers, so that Germany could not be accused of being directly involved in the Civil War in a foreign country.
This 80 year old special edition of Der Adler is complete and in good used condition with some wear to the covers. Nothing has been torn out, no writing, no odor.
